Because sometimes you just need a few beautiful family photos. Other times, you want to capture the whole story.
If you’ve ever looked into booking family photos, you’ve probably wondered about the difference between mini sessions and full photography sessions.
Is a full session really worth the additional investment? Are mini sessions enough? And do your kids really need to cooperate for an entire hour?
As a family photographer in London, Ontario, I offer both options, and I genuinely love them for different reasons.
However, a mini session isn’t simply a shorter, more affordable version of a full session. They’re two different experiences designed to accomplish different things.
Neither is necessarily better. Instead, the right choice depends on your family, your expectations, and the photographs you’re hoping to capture.
Let’s break it down!
Mini sessions are short, structured photography experiences offered on select dates throughout the year.
Think Christmas minis, spring blossoms, fall family portraits, and other seasonal opportunities to get in front of the camera.
They’re designed to be quick, convenient, affordable, and focused on capturing a beautiful selection of photographs.
Because mini sessions are shorter and typically scheduled back-to-back, I’m able to offer them at a lower investment than full sessions.
As a result, they’re a fantastic option for families who want professional photographs without committing to a longer experience.
They’re affordable and accessible. Professional photography is an investment. However, not every family needs or wants a full session multiple times a year. Minis make it easier to document your family without the larger financial commitment.
They’re quick and convenient. Between work, school, extracurricular activities, and everything else, family life is busy! Fortunately, mini sessions make updating your family photos relatively simple. Just book your time slot, show up, and smile!
You can book them more frequently. This might be my favourite part. Your kids are constantly changing, and mini sessions allow you to capture those changes throughout the year. Spring photos, fall portraits, Christmas cards… suddenly, you have a beautiful timeline of your family growing up.
They’re perfect for a handful of beautiful portraits. Maybe you want an updated family photo for your living room, a few photographs of the kids, or something special for Grandma. If that’s what you’re looking for, a mini session might be exactly what you need.
Ultimately, not every photography experience needs to be elaborate to be meaningful.
This is one of the biggest practical differences between mini sessions and full sessions.
Mini sessions are offered on specific dates, at specific locations, during predetermined time slots.
For example, if I announce fall mini sessions at a particular location on October 18th, those sessions are only available at that location on that date.
Unfortunately, they can’t be moved to a different weekend or your favourite park.
Why? Because scheduling multiple families at the same location allows me to offer these sessions at a more accessible price.
Therefore, if you’re hoping for a particular date, location, or time outside of an advertised mini session, a full photography session is likely your better option.
A full photography session is a longer, more personalized experience designed to capture a greater variety of photographs and interactions.
Unlike mini sessions, full sessions offer more flexibility when it comes to scheduling, locations, and the overall experience.
More importantly, they give us something incredibly valuable.
Time.
Time to explore, play, connect, and allow your family to relax.
Instead of moving quickly through a series of poses, we can slow down and let things unfold naturally.
And often, that’s when some of my favourite photographs happen.
One of the biggest misconceptions about full sessions is that they’re simply about receiving more images.
However, the real difference is the variety we’re able to create.
During a mini session, we typically focus on classic family portraits and essential combinations.
In contrast, a full session gives us time to explore different backgrounds, compositions, and interactions.
We can capture those beautiful everyone-looking-at-the-camera photographs while also making room for the spontaneous moments.
The laughter, the cuddles, the chaos, and all those little interactions that make your family yours.
As a result, your gallery tells a more complete story.
Let’s talk about kids.
Because if you’re a parent, you already know they don’t always cooperate on command.
Some children are ready to smile the second they see a camera. Others need time to warm up, explore their surroundings, or become comfortable with someone new.
During a mini session, we’re working within a limited time frame. Consequently, if your child needs most of that time to settle in, we may have fewer opportunities to capture the variety you’re hoping for.
With a full session, however, we have more flexibility.
We can take breaks, change activities, or simply give your child some space.
Often, once children stop thinking about being photographed, their personalities really start to shine.
And those genuine expressions? They’re some of my absolute favourites.
I hear this one all the time.
And as a mom myself, I completely understand.
However, here’s something important to remember.
A full photography session doesn’t mean asking your children to sit still and smile for an hour.
Actually, quite the opposite!
Instead, we can play games, explore, run around, and allow your kids to be themselves.
There’s a huge difference between asking a child to pose for an hour and letting them enjoy an hour with their family while I photograph them.
Of course, every child is different.
Some genuinely thrive during short, structured sessions. Meanwhile, others do better when there’s less pressure and more freedom.
Neither is wrong. It’s simply about understanding what works best for your family.
Want your family photographed at the beach? In a beautiful field? At your family cottage?
Perhaps you’d prefer to schedule around your toddler’s nap or capture that gorgeous golden-hour light.
Unlike mini sessions, full photography sessions give us the opportunity to plan something around your family’s preferences, subject to availability.
Additionally, we have more flexibility to accommodate specific ideas, meaningful locations, and the overall experience you’re hoping for.
For some families, that personalization alone makes the additional investment worthwhile.
| Mini Session | Full Session | |
|---|---|---|
| Session length | Short and efficient | Longer and relaxed |
| Investment | More affordable | Higher investment |
| Dates | Predetermined | Flexible scheduling |
| Location | Selected in advance | More customizable |
| Posing | More structured | Posed and candid |
| Image variety | Focused collection | Greater variety |
| Time to warm up | Limited | More flexibility |
| Best for | Seasonal updates and classic portraits | Storytelling and personalized experiences |
Exact details depend on the session offering.
Still not sure? Here’s how I would look at it.
And remember, you don’t have to choose one type of session forever!
In fact, I think there’s a beautiful place for both.
Maybe you invest in a full family session once a year, then book a Christmas mini or spring mini to keep your photographs updated throughout the seasons.
Alternatively, mini sessions might be your go-to until there’s a milestone or season of life you want to document in greater detail.
There’s no right or wrong formula.
Absolutely! Mini sessions are a wonderful option for families who want professional photographs at a lower investment. They’re especially great for seasonal updates, holiday photos, and classic family portraits.
Generally, no. Mini sessions are offered on predetermined dates at specific locations. However, if you need a different date or location, a full photography session offers more flexibility.
They certainly can be! Some toddlers do wonderfully during short, structured sessions. However, if your child tends to be shy or needs extra time to get comfortable, a full session may be a better fit.
Possibly! I always love capturing genuine smiles and natural interactions. However, because mini sessions are shorter, the focus is typically on a smaller selection of portraits. Full sessions provide more opportunities for candid moments.
If you’re looking for more variety, flexibility, personalized locations, or natural interactions, absolutely. However, if you simply need a few beautiful portraits, a mini session may be everything you’re looking for.
Mini sessions aren’t less meaningful because they’re shorter.
Likewise, full sessions aren’t automatically better because they cost more.
They’re simply different.
I love mini sessions because they make professional photography more accessible and encourage families to document their lives more frequently.
Meanwhile, I love full sessions because they allow us to slow down, connect, and create photographs that tell a bigger story.
Regardless of which experience you choose, I’m bringing the same creativity, professionalism, and care to your photographs.
Because whether we spend 15 minutes together or an entire hour, those images become part of your family’s history.
They’ll hang on your walls, sit in albums, and be shared with grandparents.
Someday, your children will look back at them and see a version of their family they barely remember.
And I think that’s worth documenting, however you choose to do it.
Whether you’re looking for a quick seasonal update or a more personalized family photography experience, I’d love to help you capture this chapter of your family’s story.

Because the most important thing isn’t whether you book a mini session or a full session.
It’s that you make the time to get in the photographs.
Your kids are growing. Your family is changing. And these are the days you’ll want to remember.
See you in front of the camera!
